The world of dental braces has changed dramatically over the last number of years. There are many misconceptions about what certain types of braces can actually do and whether or not you should even get them. Braces are a commitment and you should be fully prepared. Today I will be telling you the 4 things to know before you get braces.
1: The Age Limit For Braces
Simply put, there is none. Usually when we think of orthodontics we get an image of a teenager, however this shouldn’t be the case. No matter what your age, if you have crooked teeth you could benefit from braces, just as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. Adult braces are becoming far more commonplace. There is no stigma attached to it anymore, even Tom Cruise got in on the action by opting for braces at 45 years of age.
2: Your Bite Is As Important As Straightness
People often have the misconception that straightening teeth is all that’s involved. That’s not true. Your bite is just as important as your smile for any reputable orthodontist. Having a misaligned bite corrected helps stop your teeth becoming crooked again, it’s hugely important for your overall mouth health.
3: Stay With The Same Orthodontist If Possible
Ideally you should begin with an orthodontist and stay with them for however long it takes until those braces come off. Generally orthodontists don’t give you a discount if you are halfway through the process, you will more than likely have to pay for the whole thing again. This is due to the fact that it can actually be even more complicated for them, as different orthodontists may have slightly different approaches. But life doesn’t always work that way. For example if you are moving from the area, ask your orthodontist to either give you the records or send them on to your new orthodontist.
4: You Will Have To Wear A Retainer
The fact is that after any kind of braces, you will have to wear a retainer. Even with invisalign. If you don’t wear your retainer as directed, your teeth will start to go back to how they were before you wore the braces. Many adults who opt for braces actually had braces when they were children, but neglected to wear their retainer afterwards, resulting in their teeth becoming crooked again over time.
There are also other things to consider that aren’t on this list. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask your orthodontist. At Smile Store Cork we are here to help and are happy to alleviate any concerns you might have about braces. Contact us today to start discussing your options.
